1977-1980

1977: Ultra 6 freewheels to fit on 120mm OLD hubs.

1979: Ultra 7 freewheels to fit on 126 OLD hubs. List of components available in 1979 (chart to the right).

1980: Mighty Click rear derailleur/index shift system. SunTour VGT rear derailleurs and Power thumb shifters were popular on early mountain bikes.

1983

July 1983 magazine ad:

1985

New XC group introduced in late 1984 for the 1985 model year (see magazine article above from December 1984): Brass pulley were retrofitted to brakes with plastic rollers. SunTour sales peak with 26 different rear derailleurs. Shimano introduces SIS index shifting with Dura-Ace components (road).

AccuShift index shifting introduced on 5 road and 4 mountain groups. There were many problems with mis-matched parts not indexing properly. Shimano more tightly controlled the allowable component spec and had a 3 year head start on SunTour. Shifting options include Index Power Control with positions for regular spaced indexing, Ultra spaced indexing and friction Index Friction Control allows shifting in regular spaced indexing and friction Index Control is standard spaced indexing only Power Control uses the retro friction for better control and Friction Control is just regular friction shifting

1990

AccuShift Plus ramped cogs and Power Ring chain wheels improved shifting performance. SunTour X-Press under bar, two lever shifters. Multi Mount control systems allow the shifters to be mounted inboard or outboard of the brake lever. Licensed the Beast front shifting system from Browning. The chain was shifted by hinged gates instead of a front derailleur. Delivery was 18 months late and very few bikes actually used the system. Below are some pictures of the system installed on nickel plated Team Marin frame. It is functional but seems to have a mind of its own some time. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

This is the control box. The signal from the shifter moves the "railroad switch" to engage the tab that hinges the chain ring assembly.

Pretty simple stuff. "H" for a higher gear and "L" for a lower gear.

For 1995, the XC Pro and XC Expert components are still listed as available. The major push is the new XR (XR 50, XR 100, XR 150)series of components being promoted as "Plug and Play". Plug and Play allows the SunTour components to be used with Shimano drivetrains. Most of the components appear to be pretty basic and never found widespread usage. SR SunTour forks are 9005, 8005 and 7005. Ergo Tec and Ergo Twist shifters are still offered. US sales office closes January 1, 1995.

1996

US office re-opens and concentrates on lower priced components. I've not seen any catalog info for 1996 so I assume that there were no parts available.

1997

Pretty thin catalog for this year. Suspension forks include the Sierra Magic 9007(with elastomer or MCU elastomers), 7007 and 8007. Components are all Plug and Play compatible and include the Giga 450, Giga 350, XR250, XR150 and SX50. Components are pretty much limited to derailleurs, cranks, shifters (twist or thumb), freewheels and cassettes. Most parts look to be fairly inexpensive and I am not aware of any OE spec. Mostly sold as inexpensive replacement parts.
